Discover Land Surveying at the South Garland Library
If you have ever wondered how property boundaries are determined, how roads are placed, or how cities grow in an organized way, the answer often begins with land surveying.
Visitors to the South Garland Library now have the opportunity to learn more about this important profession through a new surveying display presented by TSPS Chapter 5 of the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors.
The display opened on Thursday, March 5, and will remain available for the public to explore through the end of March.
A Look Into the World of Surveying
Located inside the library at the entrance to the New Books section, the display invites visitors of all ages to take a closer look at the tools and history behind the surveying profession. Although the exhibit is informational and displayed safely behind a glass case, it provides a unique opportunity to see both historical and modern surveying equipment up close. Items featured in the display include:
- Surveying caps
- Total stations (both modern and older models)
- Calculators used by surveyors through the years
- Authentic field books used by professional surveyors
Together, these items illustrate how surveying technology has evolved while still serving the same essential purpose: accurately measuring and mapping land. Informational signage within the exhibit explains what land surveyors do and why their work is so important to the development of communities.
Why Land Surveying Matters
Many people encounter the results of surveying every day without realizing it. Surveyors help establish property boundaries, guide the placement of roads and infrastructure, and ensure that development projects are built accurately and legally. From residential neighborhoods to large-scale construction projects, surveyors play a key role in shaping the places where people live, work, and travel. Displays like this help introduce the profession to the community and highlight the impact surveyors have on the built environment.
Celebrating the Profession
The exhibit also arrives just in time to help celebrate National Surveyors Week, which takes place March 15–21 each year. The week is dedicated to recognizing the professionals who quite literally lay the groundwork for communities across the country. Through educational displays and outreach efforts like this one, TSPS Chapter 5 hopes to raise awareness of the surveying profession and inspire curiosity about how land is measured, mapped, and developed.
Community Collaboration
TSPS Chapter 5 would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at the South Garland Library for providing space for the display and helping connect the surveying profession with the Garland community. A special thank you also goes to volunteers Marcos A. Madrid, RPLS, and Chris Freeman, RPLS, who assisted in setting up the exhibit and contributed equipment to help showcase the tools surveyors use in the field. Their contributions helped bring the display to life and made it possible for library visitors to experience a small window into the world of land surveying.
Visit the Display
Community members are encouraged to stop by the South Garland Library before the end of March to view the exhibit and learn more about the profession that helps shape our communities.
