Welcome to the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors (TSPS) Dallas—Chapter 5

As I stepped into this role, I found myself thinking less about what our chapter already does well and more about where we can make the biggest difference. We do a great job introducing people to surveying. Scholarships, career fairs, classroom visits, outreach—those things matter, and they always will. None of us would have a profession without the next generation.

But I keep coming back to what happens after someone gets started.

The years after becoming a Surveyor-in-Training or earning an RPLS license are when the real learning begins. You’re making decisions that carry weight. You’re managing projects, talking with clients, figuring out problems that don’t have a textbook answer, and realizing that every survey teaches you something new. That’s where a professional community can make all the difference.

I’d like Chapter 5 to be part of that journey.

A monthly meeting is valuable, but it shouldn’t be the only reason people stay involved. I hope this becomes a place where members come because they know they’ll leave with a new idea, a better question, a different perspective, or a conversation that sticks with them. Sometimes that’s a technical discussion. Sometimes it’s hearing how another surveyor handled a difficult project. Sometimes it’s simply meeting someone who’s been through the same challenge.

I also think we have an opportunity to make better use of the experience already in this room. Every chapter meeting brings together people who have spent decades solving problems most of us haven’t seen yet. That knowledge is too valuable to keep to ourselves. Passing it along has always been part of surveying, and I hope we create even more opportunities for it to happen naturally.

If, over the next few years, members begin to think of Chapter 5 as the place they turn to throughout their careers—not just while they’re earning continuing education hours or working toward a license—I think we’ll be on the right path. We’ll still be bringing new people into the profession. We’ll also be helping them build long, successful careers once they’re here.

That’s the kind of chapter I’d like us to build together.
